The Art of Being Socially Responsible on Social Media

You use it to check in with friends, find the latest news and even just be in the loop. That high school friend just had her baby, Jane finally broke it off with John and that acquaintance you met that one time is finally getting a new car.
But are you being socially responsible on social media? It’s more than sharing an update of your cute new puppy or your adorable niece. Although social media was created to socialize, it also has the power to do social good. Next time you log onto social media, consider changing the tune of your update.
Use Your Social Media Voice
By simply having a social media site, you have the power to make a difference. You never know who could see an update that you post. With sharing capabilities, a friend of a friend of a friend could catch wind of your post and contribute to the organization that you’re advocating for.
Although you can post for your choice organization regularly, tragedies and unexpected occurrences are bound to pop up. That’s the best time to be socially responsible. Don’t go quiet. You can raise your voice to help provide aid, help spread the word or get people to see a donation site. You have the power with a click of your mouse.
Ignite an Idea, Spark Social Change
You feel a strong connection for the organizations where you volunteer time and monetary contributions. And if you love an organization so much, your friends might feel the same way. That’s why you should use social media to advocate for the organizations that are near and dear to your heart.
First, locate an organization’s Facebook or Twitter page, and any other social media outlets they may be a part of. Then don’t be afraid to be actively involved in the conversation that they put out to the social media world. Share posts, leave your thoughts and ideas in the comments or offer up any ways to help on the sites. The organization will be thrilled to have your interaction, and your friends will see your posts pop up that are associated with the organization. In turn, they may follow your lead.
Be the Change You Want to See
Besides helping other organizations or friends in your socially responsible role on social media, you can even be a change for something that isn’t already happening online. Create a Facebook page, develop a Twitter hashtag and get the word out.
You have the perfect outlets right at your fingertips. If there’s a cause you’re passionate for but there’s no help currently in your community, be that voice. Social media has the power to get you there.
